Finding Encouragement in Community

In life, we often face challenges and setbacks that test our faith and resilience. Whether it’s missed opportunities or unforeseen obstacles, it can be easy to feel disheartened. However, as believers, we find strength and encouragement in gospel relationships—connections shaped by faith and a shared commitment to Christ.

The Story of Edward: A Lesson in Perseverance

Consider the story of Edward, an Olympian who dedicated ten years of his life to mastering his sport. Despite countless hours of training and numerous sacrifices, Edward faced a heartbreaking setback during the Olympic qualifiers. Yet, it was a call from his coach that reignited his hope. The coach reminded Edward of his gifts and potential, asking the pivotal question: “When are we going to get back to work?”

Similarly, as Christians, we sometimes fall short of our goals or feel discouraged in our faith journey. It’s in these moments that we need the encouragement of others to remind us of our identity in Christ and our calling. Just as Edward’s coach played a vital role in his comeback, gospel relationships can provide the support and motivation we need to persevere.

The Power of Gospel Relationships

In the book of Acts, the Apostle Paul experienced significant opposition and hardships during his missionary journeys. Yet, he found

strength and encouragement through gospel relationships. When Paul arrived in Corinth, he met Aquila and Priscilla—Roman Jews who had been expelled from their home and relocated to Corinth. Their hospitality and shared faith provided Paul with much-needed support.

These relationships, centered around the gospel, built in Paul a gospel courage—a courage that enabled him to continue preaching and establishing churches despite ongoing challenges. Similarly, our faith communities—our friends, mentors, and fellow believers—play a crucial role in encouraging and supporting us.

Finding Your Aquila and Priscilla

Who are the Aquilas and Priscillas in your life? Who are the individuals that God has placed in your path to support and encourage you in your faith journey? It’s important to seek out and deepen these gospel-centered relationships, as they are instrumental in helping us remain steadfast in our calling.

Investing in Gospel-Centered Community

Building a gospel-centered community requires intentionality. It involves being selective about who you allow to invest in you and who you invest in. While it’s important to have friendships that challenge and grow your faith, it’s equally vital to recognize when certain relationships may be distracting you from God’s call. Don’t hesitate to set boundaries or even distance yourself from relationships that don’t align with your faith journey.

The Impact of Gospel Encouragement

Encouragement from gospel-centered relationships goes beyond mere words; it has the power to transform lives. When we stand together in faith, we can overcome opposition and face hardships with confidence. Just as Paul found the strength to continue his mission in Corinth, we too can find the courage to live out our faith boldly.
